The Faces of Pain Awareness Program is an initiative started by the Canadian Pain Coalition, Chronic Pain Association of Canada, and L’Association Québéquoise contre la douleur chronique, which invites patients to submit a 300 word-story with a photograph that describes their own personal journey with Pain. The sharing of personal experiences with pain will expand the community of support  and will help to illustrate the human cost of living in pain and the importance of proper pain care for all Canadians.

Hi, my name is Sharda Khan.  I have been living with severe to excruciating pain since September 2003. Because of pain, I cannot walk very much and haven’t been able to lose the weight.  It’s a vicious roller coaster cycle I cannot control.

On the outside all looked good, but under the surface there were stabbing, burning, and piercing pain with muscle spasms in at least two areas most of the time. How do you explain to others why you aren’t working or doing chores around the home?

I developed my “bag of tricks” or coping strategies that most often work but sometimes fail.  I came to the realization that “living well” in spite of the pain requires a shift in attitude and an adaptive lifestyle that acknowledge the pain but are not ruled by the pain.

A few of us are lucky. We find a pain specialist ready, willing and able to tackle the problem from our perspective. What we need is a wider understanding that pain is sometimes something unto itself, not merely a direct by-product of injury or illness.
